WHAT IS REFLEXOLOGY LYMPH DRAINAGE?

Reflexology Lymph Drainage (RLD) is an award winning reflexology technique that focuses on isolating and stimulating the lymphatic reflexes on the feet.
The aim of this is to cause an effect on the drainage function of the lymphatic system in the body.

RLD is a unique sequence that has been researched and developed by Sally Kay BSc(Hons) while she was working with breast cancer patients suffering with secondary lymphoedema in one or both arms after surgery or treatment. The technique was found to reduce the volume of swelling and improve quality of life.
What is the Lymphatic System?

​ The lymphatic system is a vital element in protecting us from infections and disease. It is a network of lymph vessels, lymph nodes and various organs such as the spleen.
The main functions of the lymphatic system are immune defense, absorbing fat and fluid balance. Excess fluid (which leaks out of blood vessels into body tissues,) is collected, filtered and returned safely back into the blood stream. This prevents tissue swelling, a condition called lymphoedema.

Lymphoedema

Lymphoedema is a chronic condition which causes swelling due to the blockage, damage or absence of drainage channels. It can impact mobility, cause aches and discomfort as well as reduce quality of life.

Primary lymphoedema is relatively rare and is a genetic condition. A person will be born with this condition.
​
Secondary lymphoedema develops when a lymphatic system becomes obstructed or destroyed, often due to cancer surgery and radiation therapy.
Approximately 20% of breast cancer patients develop secondary lymphoedema of the arm and the research showed that it made a positive difference to these patients after just one treatment. Further treatments supported the maintenance of that reduced swelling.

Can RLD support other conditions?
Yes, RLD may also benefit clients who have auto immune conditions such as MS, fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis as well as clients who have migraines. It can also be useful to help aid post operative recovery.
